Begins: Thursday, 12th September // Duration: 6 one-hour sessions // Time: 7.45-9pm // Location: Z-Arts, Music Space, Hulme // Price: £60

This workshop is intended to introduce some of the techniques and aesthetic principles of contemporary music, sometimes called “new music”. All levels of musicianship are welcome, but it is aimed particularly at learners and interested amateurs who have had little or no opportunity to play in ensembles. The only requirements are a basic familiarity with your instrument and a mind that is open to the new and unusual.

Good sight reading is not required. Instead, we will use graphic scores, simple notation, and elementary techniques of minimalism as the basis to explore a variety of approaches to music, experimenting with the range of sounds available from your instrument. The workshop will introduce contemporary concepts of melody, rhythm, and texture and provide practice in careful listening and group improvisation. Music does not have to be difficult or virtuosic to be captivating and exciting, and there is no reason why beginners and amateurs cannot engage with new approaches to music. The aim is to provide you the opportunity to experiment with your instrument in a no-pressure, encouraging atmosphere with like-minded musicians. All instruments and voices are welcome.

Tim Wise is a senior lecturer in music at the University of Salford. He is a musicologist and saxophonist-improvisor-composer who has worked in a range of different musical genres.
