Stephen Grew has been playing piano and electronic keyboards for 25 years. His music is completely improvised. He creates spontaneous compositions with other musicians in the heat of the moment. He also performs as a soloist . He is based in Lancaster, UK, and has toured extensively, touring and recording with many musicians from the free improvised scene here in Britain and abroad. Performing in Grutronic, a four piece electronic band, and Grew Trio, Grew Quartet and Grew & Grew. He has also performed with Evan Parker, Keith Tippett, Graham Clark, Pat Thomas, Howard Riley and many others. Long standing collaborators are his brother, Nicholas Grew, Richard Scott, David Ross and Philip Marks.

The Into a Better Shape programme has been developed by Turner Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid, Producer Jackie Jones and selected artists. Stage two of the programme is currently being developed centring around; curating exhibitions, performance installation, talks and events to shine a light on the creative melting pot of talent whilst pushing forward more ambitious contemporary art programming throughout the city, across different venues and in underused spaces.

The Birley is an artist-led studios & project space in Preston city centre, Lancashire UK.
Our project spaces exist to support critically and socially engaged contemporary art practice. Hosting workshops, residencies, exhibitions and live events, as well as outside/off-site projects, we support artists who are testing out new ideas, developing collaborations, and taking an experimental approach to practice.
Our studios offer dedicated space for up to 30 artists, working in a range of media. We are based in former Preston City Council offices, in the markets area of the city centre.
