Dot piece - John Stevens

 John Stevens’ ‘Dot piece’

Performed by Ensemble for Experimental Music and Theater (2015)

Excerpt from the book

'Using only clicks (the shortest sounds we can make) each individual in the group tries to locate a space (silence) in which to place their click (dot). Because of the group activity, the silences are minute and pass by rapidly, so by the time you have heard a space, and attempted to put a dot in it, that space may have vanished..

A participant noted that we may; listen out for the sound created by another to end, then add our sound rather than listening for a silence. PM found this helpful, then interestingly at the next workshop we did a version of John Steven's piece Click/or is it Samuel Beckett titled piece, during this he found himself, hearing silences populated by clicks: subtle difference but for him a minor epithany
